Jane Brunson Marks

Jane Brunson Marks (born 1888, died after 1970) was ACTIVE in civic work.

Early life and family

Jane Brunson was born in Mount Hope, Wisconsin, in 1888, the daughter of Delford Benton Brunson and EFFIE Fox. Delford B. Brunson was the son of J.W. Brunson a farmer. J.W. Brunson was born in 1805 in Sing Sing, New York; son of Ira Brunson. His father was a stone-cutter by trade and was drowned one year after the birth of this son, while he was keeping the ferry across the Hudson Biver, at that time. His mother moved to Danbury, Connecticut. At the age of 15 years, he became an apprentice to the hatter's trade, under Capt. John Foot, with whom he lived until he was 19 years of age; began work for himself in 1824, after the death of his mother; followed his trade at different places for some time, then went to Utica, New York, and attended school for six months. He became a member of a Masonic Lodge in 1826. He emigrated to Columbus, Ohio, where he lived nine years, and, in 1836, moved to Grant County, Wisconsin, locating at Patch Grove; in 1836, he returned to Ohio; came back to Wisconsin in the winter of 1837, riding all the way on horseback, locating at Cassville, Wisconsin, and began merchandising in company with Mr. Sellers, for a short period; then moved to Lancaster, Wisconsin, and kept the first store at that place. In 1839, he was appointed Tax Collector for Grant Co., and, in 1840, he moved to Mt. Hope, Wisconsin. He was married the first time in 1829, at Blendon Township, Franklin County, Ohio, to Margaret Benton, daughter of Samuel and Aurelia Benton, who died in 1833; was married the second time in 1840, in Crawford County, Wisconsin, to Henrietta Foster, daughter of Henry and Julie Foster; was married the third time in 1847, to Almina Benton, sister of his first wife. He had two children by his first wife —Mary J. and Alfred; three by his second wife — Benjamin F., Emily M., Ida E.; four by his third wife — Aurelia F., Delford B., Almina, Jennie E. He was Justice of the Peace for thirty years; Chairman of the Town Board two years, and member of the County Board one year. In polities he was a Greenbacker; was a member of the M. E. Church.

She attended Milwaukee-Downer College and was a member of the Milwaukee-Downer Alumni Club.

Career

Jane Brunson Marks has served on board of H. S. Parent-Teacher Association for several years and as Philanthropic Chairman of Woman's Club of Burbank, located at 703 E. Olive Avenue in Burbank.

She was the President of Woman's Club of Burbank from 1927 to 1928 and reelected from 1928 to 1929. The Burbank Club was incorporated and admitted to state federation in 1917. Its purpose was advancement in all lines of general culture and the promotion of the community welfare. At the 61 years celebrations, invitations had been extended to past presidents of the club including Jane Marks.

Personal life

Jane Brunson Marks moved to California in 1908 and lived at 1055 Fairmount Road, Burbank, California.

She married William Philip Marks and had one son: William Philip B., Jr.
