Israel Shotokan
Israel Shotokan () is a non-profit organization established in 1970 whose mission is to practice and teach traditional karate-do in Israel. It follows the karate system founded by Tsutomu Ohshima, a student of Gichin Funakoshi, the father of Shotokan. As such, it is an international affiliate of Shotokan Karate of America, with Ohshima being its chief instructor (shihan).
History
The late Meir Yahel studied Karate in Paris, France in 1964. Upon his return to Israel in December 1969, he opened the first karate dojo in Tel-Aviv. Meir Ganor started teaching karate at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem in 1971. These two dojos formed the first major schools of karate in Israel, schools which produced many karate practitioners over the years in Israel. By now, Israel Shotokan has over 30 dojos in Israel with hundreds of members taking part in local practices, special training and national activities.
