Iskra (band)
Iskra is a Canadian anarchist crust punk and extreme metal band founded in Victoria, British Columbia in 2002.
Because the band performs, records, and releases their material outside of the confines of the mass media, Iskra are considered part of the anarchist underground punk MusicAL tradition, which emerged in the late 1970s with bands like Crass and Discharge. By blending elements of crust punk, black metal, powerviolence, grindcore, and thrash metal, Iskra say they have created their own subgenre, "blackened crust." Obvious musical influences include Slayer, Bathory, and Amebix. The band includes former members of the earlier anarchist punk band Black Kronstadt, who in later years also described their music as "blackened crust."
Lyrically, Iskra follow in the anarcho-punk tradition of Crass and Conflict. Self-proclaimed anarchists, the band addresses social issues like homophobia, sexism, racism, the rights of indigenous peoples, The Effects of conservative and rightwing political organizations (such as the World Trade Organization, World Bank, CAFTA, NAFTA and the Independent Task Force on North America), as well as the impact of state policy on the common good.
