International Network for the Independent Oversight of Policing (INIOP)
The International Network for the Independent Oversight of Policing, also known as INIOP was created to bring together organisations from around the world which are involved in the oversight of policing. The network's principal aims are to champion the effective oversight of policing; to provide opportunities for oversight bodies to share learning and best practice; to create minimum standards for oversight of policing; and to provide support to countries looking to maintain or setup effective oversight mechanisms.
Founding members include the Independent Police Complaints Commission for England and Wales, the Police Ombudsman for Northern Ireland, the Federal Bureau for Internal Affairs (Austria), Comite P (Belgium), the Office of the Police Complaints Commissioner (British Columbia), Garda Siochana Ombudsman Commission (Republic of Ireland), Independent Complaints Directorate (South Africa), Independent Police Auditor (San Jose), Independent Review Panel (Miami Dade County), Office of the Complaints Commissioner (Cayman Islands), Police Complaints Authority (New Zealand), New Brunswick Police Commission, Office of the Community Ombudsman for the City of Boise, Military Police Complaint Commission (Ottawa, Canada), Office of the Ombudsman (Namibia).
It is hoped that a steering group will be created in early 2007 to lead the developed of the network, with a formal network being launched in the Autumn of 2008. The Independent Police Complaints Commission is currently Providing secretariat support, and is handling all INIOP related enquiries.
