Interflash cobra

INTERFlash Cobra is a GUI based Operating system designed for use on Desktop PC's, Laptop Computers and Home Servers. Cobra was known by the codename CoSMoS up until two weeks prior to release after six months of development. On the 25th of December 2007 INTERFlash Cobra will be released to the general public for a price of ÂĢ4.99 GBP. INTERFlash Cobra boasts lots of new features from its predeccesor including improved kernel panic support and increased speed due to a heavily modified linux kernel. The Operating system is unique in that its kernel comprises features from numerous other kernels available for free, it uses sections from kernels such as Darwin, FreeBSD, MachMicro kernel the linux kernel and also a new kernel developed by INTERFlash called Phlux for use on servers. Like Mac OS X the phlux kernel is available for free download from the INTERFlash website and is used by developers to base their own systems on.

Development

Work on INTERFlash Cobra began in March 2006, basing the OS on the idea that you can have the best of all worlds for a fraction of the price. Early versions of Cobra were unable to multitask an were unable of managing processes. However after numerous versions the kernel was modified to run using gnome and the GUI was imported into Cobra. Cobra uses the latest version of the GNOME desktop environment and the Cobra series has followed the releases of GNOME very closely using the latest version available at the time for each release. The Operating System also does the same for the linux kernel importeing each version as the version of cobra updates. Cobra can also be updated using simple coronary packages and the kernel is upgraded using simple file systems.

Versions

INTERFlash Cobra is set for updates improving the overall use of the system and the improvement of the user experience. Updates are planned fortnightly and improve simple and major parts of the INTERFlash Operating system. Each version is codenamed with the name of a monkey, this allows for quick reference and avoids confusion between different versions of the system.

Features new GUI far updated from Cosmos CMS. Contains Latest versions of the Linux Kernel and the GNOME desktop environment. Flash based and X window system based. Also features support for GTK 2.0 compatible themes allowing for hundreds of themes usable on Cobra. The transition between Cosmos and Cobra is the largest possible change transforming the TUI into a more modern and easier to access and use GUI


1.2)(6/1/08) Baboon :-
Baboon contains 50 new features from the previous version including updated UI using the Phos theme. It also features significant code changes with numerous bugs fixed and recoded. The kernel is now 5% faster than previous versions due to kernel code changes. The system has the latest versions of Evolution gDesklets and Evolution. In general the changes to Baboon are more code based although there are a few graphical changes such as wallpapers and icons.

==Critisms== Cobra was jilted by many linux users including significant people in the linux community due to its simplicity and lack of features, however it was this that made Cobra appeal to the normal PC users community. Cobra became the linux distrobution of choice for UNIX beginners placing it on a par with Mac OS X in terms of simplicity and ease of use. The system was also criticised due to the fact that although minimalistic in appearance and use, even including bundled applications. This was because the overall size of the system came up to 1.08 GB meaning that it could not be installed on the older systems that Cobra was originally designed for, however, the CEO and Design team leader explained that this was due to significant code changes in the GNOME desktop environment and the overall Linux kernel and also because numerous theme packs were included and also GTK themes were built into Cobra. It was also explained that Cobra featured numerous system packs to make the system safer and more secure.

Advantages

Cobra is noted for having numerous advantages including the fact that it is virus proof, this is because it is a natural linux system requiring root access for viruses to be installed. The System was also noted for having a theme easily accessible for users of all types including both PC, and Mac users. Cobra also features new GTK themes including the Phos theme allowing for easy use of advanced menus. It also contains WINE built into the core allowing users to run and install their windows applications on top of the Cobra system.

History

Cobra started of as a CMS designed for use on Windows XP and was originally called COSMOS. Built, Designed and compiled under the Microsoft .net framework, it utilized numerous Windows Api's and allowed simple access to browse numerous folders on a windows based system. It also contained the then current version of INTERFlash office (then 2006) which allowed the user to accomplish typical windows tasks quickly and efficiently using the Cosmos Core. The current Cobra logo is a logo of a Cobra coiled around the letters OS in this case standing for Operating System. The logo was designed by the INTERFlash design studio and underwent numerous designs before the finished version was released. image:

Use

Currently Cobra is in use by schools and home pcs however when version 1.4 is released it will contain business applications allowing Cobra to be used in Offices and Servers. The version will contain improved Disk managers as well as Server support allowing numerous computers to run of the single host computer.
