Inter-Varsity Club (IVC)
Inter-Varsity Club (IVC) is a national network of autonomous non-profit making social events clubs aimed at professionals, graduates and like-minded people in the United Kingdom. Each club is based in a particular locality and is affiliated to the Association of Inter-Varsity Clubs (AIVC), which helps co-ordinate joint events between clubs and assists with promotion and practical help.
History
Established in 1946, the IVC network has grown to nearly 50 clubs and a total membership of around 5,000 members across the UK.
Club events
Each month every IVC publishes a lively and varied events programmes and members can go to as many events as they like. Events are organised by members and there’s always a wide range to choose from. Each club elects a committee from its membership to run its affairs and clubs may also put on committee-organised events. All events are advertised in the club's monthly bulletin which is sent out to members.
The range of activities varies greatly from club to club. Specific types of event typical to an IVC club include:
Weekends away
Individual members or a club committee may organise occasional weekends away which may be open to other IVC clubs.
Club nights
A feature of all IVC clubs is a club night which is usually at a public bar or cafe. New and prospective members are encouraged to come along to these events to meet and socialise with existing members. This gives them the chance to meet as many members as possible and helps them decide whether the club is for them.
Committee parties
Most clubs organise ticketed summer and Christmas parties for their members.
Committee structures
Committees are elected at a club's annual general meeting (AGM).
AIVC has a model constitution which sets out the committee roles although individual clubs can amend their constitutions. Generally club committees consist of the following roles:
- Chairperson, responsible for overall management of the club.
- Secretary.
- Treasurer.
- Membership Secretary, who looks after new and/or existing members and collects subscriptions.
- Bulletin editor, who oversees production of a monthly events bulletin sent to members.
- Events co-ordinator, who collates events which appear in the bulletin.
- AIVC Liaison Officer (ALO), responsible for communications with other IVC clubs.
- Web officer, responsible for the club's web site.
- Publicity officer, who promotes and places advertising to attract new members.
AIVC also has a national committee and holds an AGM each year to which clubs send delegates.
