Inferiority Complex (band)

Inferiority Complex is an Australian three-piece grunge band who are well known in the Australian Underground music scene. The band formed as Paranoia in 2007, with lead vocalist Martin Derer, who has since been controversially ommitted from the band by the newer members. The band's current line-up consists of Zebedee Pearce (guitar/lead vocals), Thomas Brook (bass guitar), and Matthew Steffensen (drums/backup vocals). To date, the band has been very successful, as they have had two songs in the Triple J top 100 rock charts, Spiral, placed 6th, and Greener on the Other Side, placed 2nd. It is widely believed that Inferiority Complex quickly became famous after entering a local Battle of the Bands competition. They are an inspiration to beginning bands everywhere.

History

The Paranoia Sessions

Martin Derer formed the band, Paranoia, himself, in 2007. For almost 2 years the band consisted of only Martin Derer and Zebedee Pearce. During this time the duo wrote many songs together. Zeb played all the INSTRUMENTS on the recordings and Marty performed the Vocals. The duo were unable to perform their songs live due to their lack of musicians. Paranoia had a few hit songs which are still performed by the current band today; the most notable of these being Incisions. An EP, tittled The Paranoia Sessions was later released by the current band to honour the legacy of the original Paranoia band. The EP features the most notable songs written by Paranoia, with Martin Derer as vocalist.

The Complex

In 2009, Paranoia recruited the genius Drummer, Matthew Steffensen, and the reluctant Bass player, Thomas Brook. Shortly after the new line-up was announced, the band changed their name to Inferiority Complex. However, it wasn't long before Matty and Tom began to see a weak point in the line-up; they believed Martin Derer to be a weak vocalist. Zebedee Pearce, who had been hiding his powerful vocals in the backline, was quick to jump at the opportunity and take the role of lead vocals. He later banished Martin Derer from the band.
Marty's ommission from the band went as follows:

Zeb: We had a practice today and everyone thinks that I would be a better vocalist.
Marty: That's fine. I'm cool. I don't even want to punch you in the face.
Zeb: Good. I'm glad we can be mature AbOUT this.

Martin Derer later formed the experimental indie band known as Twisted Sun.

In late 2009, Inferiority Complex recorded their first demo. They also released the single, Spiral, from their yet-to-be-released album. Spiral made the top 100 in its second week and remained there for over a month; it peaked at 6th in the charts. Spiral was the first song written by the new line-up and to this day, they have been quoted as saying it's one of their best. Inferiority Complex have announced plans to release a full length album in mid-2010. It was leaked in late 2009 that the album would be called Synthesis; but nothing has been officially verified.
