Inanimate Insanity II: The Movie
Inanimate Insanity II: The Movie (also known as II2 Movie) is a 2024 American animated web film produced by Adamation, Inc. and released on YouTube. It serves as the finale of Inanimate Insanity II, the second season of the animated web series Inanimate Insanity, created by Adam Katz. The film is composed of three acts — "The Reality of the Situation", "Through No Choice of Your Own", and "Objects in Mirror" — released individually on YouTube between September and November 2024, before being screened together as a complete feature film at a limited run of theatrical events in November 2024.
The film follows finalists Suitcase and Knife as they compete in the long-awaited conclusion of Inanimate Insanity II, while MePhone4's confrontation with his creator, Steve Cobs, threatens to destroy everything the show has built. Suitcase is ultimately crowned the winner of Inanimate Insanity II.
Background
Inanimate Insanity II entered a four-year hiatus following the release of "Hatching the Plan" in August 2020. During this period, production shifted to Inanimate Insanity Invitational, released in 2021. The finale of Season 2 was confirmed to be in active development by Adam Katz during a crew stream on May 25, 2024. During the BFDI x Inanimate Insanity 2024 Tour, co-director Brian Koch confirmed the finale would be feature-length, released in multiple parts, and written entirely by Koch himself — describing it as a "tornado" compared to the preceding episode, "Truth or Flare", and calling it the crew's "favorite thing they have ever done". Koch cited Toy Story 3 as a key creative influence.
On August 20, 2024, Koch officially referred to the project as "Inanimate Insanity II: The Movie" in a tweet. On August 27, he confirmed that each of its parts would carry individual titles, while the collected whole would constitute the movie.
Production
The film was animated in Adobe Animate and produced by Adamation, Inc. Production on Act I began on April 15, 2024, allowing staggered development of all three acts — as each act's writing and storyboarding could begin while the previous one was still in production. The film was written by Brian Koch and directed by Adam Katz, Brian Koch, and Justin Chapman. The music was composed primarily by Ben Cross and Antony Kos, with orchestral arrangements by Adam Halpin.
Act III, "Objects in Mirror", was announced via an alternate reality game (ARG) hosted on the AnimationEpic channel beginning October 18, 2024, which concluded the same day, revealing a late November 2024 release window. A trailer for the final act was released on November 8, 2024. The final act was leaked to YouTube shortly before its official release by a user who had attended an early theatrical screening.
Theatrical screenings
Prior to the YouTube release of Act III, the complete film was shown at a limited number of live theatrical screenings:
- November 24, 2024 — Rich Mix Theatre, London, United Kingdom (world premiere)
- November 25, 2024 — Laemmle NoHo 7 Theater, Los Angeles, California
- November 26, 2024 — Laemmle Glendale Theater, Los Angeles, California (Q&A session with the cast and crew followed)
The London screening was the first official Inanimate Insanity event to be held outside of the United States. A Q&A was held at the Laemmle Glendale screening on November 26, 2024, at which series creator Adam Katz confirmed the series would continue following Season 2's conclusion. The complete film has not yet received a standalone YouTube release as of 2026; co-director Brian Koch confirmed on March 7, 2026, that the full-movie YouTube upload is still planned.
Act I: "The Reality of the Situation" (September 7, 2024)
The film opens with a flashback depicting the Light Shimmers — alien egg-like entities — pursuing the early MePhone models (MePhone1, MePhone3G, and MePhone3GS), who have stolen unhatched Shimmers. In the present, Inanimate Insanity II finalists Suitcase and Knife have reached the final challenge. However, a declined phone call by MePhone4 triggers catastrophic consequences that endanger all contestants and residents of Hotel OJ and Purgatory Mansion. Suitcase and Knife are brought before Steve Cobs, who reveals the unsettling truth about the origins of MePhone4 and the contestants themselves — that MePhone4 created them subconsciously as an act of rebellion against Cobs. Cobs demands that the season reach a proper conclusion so that his reputation remains intact.
Act II: "Through No Choice of Your Own" (October 12, 2024)
Following the revelations of Act I, Suitcase and Knife undertake one final, harrowing challenge as the world around them begins to collapse. The eliminated contestants and hotel residents struggle to survive as the situation deteriorates. It is confirmed in this act that MePhone4 created all of the contestants subconsciously and that the Inanimate Insanity II contestants were made alongside the original Season 1 cast. MePhone4 freezing the final contestants in place during the hiatus — the in-universe explanation for the four-year gap between "Hatching the Plan" and "Truth or Flare" — is also addressed. Knife loses the final challenge and is eliminated, placing as runner-up.
Act III: "Objects in Mirror" (November 29, 2024)
In the concluding act, Suitcase defeats Steve Cobs with the help of MePhone4 and the assembled cast and is declared the winner of Inanimate Insanity II. The fates of all eliminated contestants are revealed. MePhone4 and Steve Cobs depart together toward Meeple, with MePhone4 reflecting on the history of the show. The Prime Shimmer and Shimmer egg — a key piece of lore — are confirmed to still exist on Inanimate Island as a post-credits addition made exclusively for the YouTube release. The episode features three original songs: "Karma Waits", "I, I", and "Make Your Own Reality", plus "The Future Is So Yesterday" from Act I, giving it the highest song count of any single Inanimate Insanity episode. "Objects in Mirror" also holds the series record for longest individual episode at over 40 minutes, surpassing Act II's then-record of 33 minutes.
