Illicit Streetwear
Illicit Streetwear is a clothing company based in Auckland, New Zealand. It grew from the Illicit HQ tattoo studio featuring art from the gallery of Simon Morse. The studio now also sells clothing from the Illicit brand. Illicit also includes designs from Martin F Emond, Greg Broadmore and Ben Stenbeck.
Tanya Thompson brought a "more feminine edge" to Illicit when she joined with her Misery brand. Thompson is a Auckland artist known for her macabre but cute animal graffiti. Her first street painting was on Karangahape Road in 1997, and her first solo exhibition, Miseryland in February 2003 sold out in a single night.
Illicit recently signed Kathy Cameron from Brisbane and her Team Kitten brand. Like Misery, Team Kitten features Japanese-inspired urban pop art.
Illicit brands are sold in New Zealand, Australia and the United States.
