I road southern
The song “I Rode Southern” is by Merle Lovell and it is about riding down the tracks on a train in order to find someone he loves. The song was written during the time that railroads were popping up all over the United States. Throughout the song it is mentioned that he rode Southern and he rode L and MN. It talks about an experience where he was treated so well on the train that he was convinced to ride another train some other time. In the song Lovell mentions how once he was treated that way he wanted to be dead because he has no other place to rest his worn out head. The song talks about a point in time when he takes his longest train ride ever. The song mentioned that he took the long train rides in order to wander from town to town to look for someone he knows. The person he was looking for had two blue eyes and he was never able to find them. Once he found the lady he was looking for he gave her everything he had with him. That this was his way of showing her how much he wanted her in his life. Among the things he gave her were his watch and his chain.
