Production

In 2006, Kate Bosworth acquired the film rights to Lost Girls & Love Hotels by Canadian novelist Catherine Hanrahan. The film, which was to be titled after the novel, was to star Bosworth as the lead character Margaret and be her first foray as a producer. In 2009, Nadia Connors had been tapped to adapt the novel and Jean-Marc Vallee to direct. However, the project remained in development and never made it to production.

In October 2017, it was announced that the project was being redeveloped under the title I Am Not a Bird, with Hanrahan adapting her own novel, Swedish filmmaker William Olsson directing, and Alexandra Daddario starring in the lead role of Margaret. In November 2017, Carice van Houten, Takehiro Hira, Andrew Rothney and Kate Easton were announced to join the film.

Filming began in Tokyo on October 27, 2017.
