Hema Hari Prasanna Pegu

Hema Hari Prasanna Pegu (born 3 January 1969) is an Indian politician from Assam. He is a senior leader of the Indian National Congress in the state and is the incumbent treasurer of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee.

Early life

Hema Hari Prasanna Pegu is the son of Gopal Chandra Pegu. He is a resident of Dibrugarh, Assam. Pegu studied at North Lakhimpur College and completed his MBBS from Assam Medical College, Dibrugarh, in 1996.

Political career

When the Lakhimpur Lok Sabha constituency fell vacant in 2016 after incumbent, Sarbananda Sonowal, became the Chief Minister of Assam, Pegu was selected as the Indian National Congress candidate for the by-election. He placed second behind the Bharatiya Janata Party candidate, Pradan Baruah. In the 2021 Assam Legislative Assembly election, Pegu was nominated as the Indian National Congress candidate for Jonai Assembly constituency. He placed second behind the Bharatiya Janata Party candidate, Bhubon Pegu. In 2023, Pegu was appointed treasurer of the Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC). Pegu is also a senior spokesperson for the APCC and the general secretary of the North East Congress Coordination Committee.
