Help (website)
Help.com was started by cNet in 2006.
Since it's humble start of Help.com beta to a full working website, many people have since sought advice on the site. It is unique in its question answering approach because the goal is to store and catalog all the questions and answers, and then tag them for easy reference searching. Many people's lives have been saved from the quality advice given on this website.
Help.com is interestingly notable in that it's service is free, and aside from the administration, entirely volunteer based in the assistance provided. The site uses forum style answers, and users can ask almost any question. It might be said that this borrows from the principles established in OpenSource projects, because many people work together without a reward in order to make the world a better place. The users vary in their reasons for helping others from their religious calls of life to the good feeling they get.
Historical Background
It appears that help.com "grew out" of a support site that CNet first used exclusively for its own properties, but apparently is now "opening up" this for collaborative development (or at least collaborative "problem solving")
