Synopsis

The story follows four characters in the fictional empire of Volstov: the Margrave Royston, a talented magician exiled for pursuing a homosexual liaison with the prince of a nearby kingdom; Hal, a young man from the country whom Royston educates and grows close to during the exile; Thom, a 'Versity student with the daunting task of studying the performance of the capital's Dragon Corps; and Rook, a hotheaded member of said Corps who flies Havemercy.

The Dragon Corps is an elite military division that flies magic-powered mechanical dragons—among which the title character—and Volstov's greatest weapon against the enemy forces of Ke-Han, against whom they have waged war for several decades. The source of power of all Volstov magicians, however, is a Well that Ke-Han succeeds in poisoning; this weakens the kingdom's defences, making all magicians deathly ill and rendering the dragons unusable. With the Dragon Corps in an uproar and Volstov's armies making a desperate last stand against the attacking forces, the task of containing the curse affecting the kingdom's magic falls to Hal.
