Harmel S. Rayat

Harmel S. Rayat is noted for being one of the early investors in SolarWindow technology, which enables see-through windows to generate electricity by 'spraying' their glass surfaces with electricity-generating coatings. Since the early 1990s, he has been investing in technology, alternative energy, and biotechnology start-ups. In 2006, he founded Talia Jevan Properties, Inc. 2 and began to acquire Canadian and US commercial real estate.

Background

Born in Uganda and relocating to India before moving with his family to the United Kingdom and then to Vancouver, British Columbia, Rayat went to work at a brokerage in his early twenties and became interested in early stage companies.

Since the early 1990s, Rayat has provided investment capital and strategic guidance to incumbent management teams of a number of entities, including a news distribution company, a financial advertising media company and several biotech and alternative energy start-ups. Beginning in 2006, he began acquiring Canadian and US commercial real estate.

Among his early biotechnology investments was MedCare Technologies, Inc. The Oakbrook, IL based company provided non-[...] and non-surgical treatment for urinary incontinence.

Subsequently, he invested in efforts to synthesize analogues from cinnamon-derived polyphenolic compounds for type-2 diabetes. Rayat also provided early research funding to HepaLife Technologies, Inc. (now Alliqua, Inc. NASDAQ: ALQA) through a Cooperative Research and Development Agreement with the US Department Of Agriculture to isolate animal-derived stem cells called ‘PICM-19’.

In 2007, as a majority shareholder, Rayat served as President of Octillion Corp (now New Energy Technology, Inc). The company intergraded films of silicon nanoparticles on to glass surfaces in order to convert solar energy coming through home and office windows into electricity, without losing significant transparency or requiring major changes in manufacturing infrastructure.

In October 2013, Rayat remained a significant shareholder after Kalen Capital Corporation invested $3,000,000 in New Energy. Three months later, in December 2013, New Energy received the Energy Innovation Award from Energy Business Review.

In late 2011, Rayat provided start-up capital for privately held Investing Media Solutions Inc., a Chicago, IL based premium financial media company.

On November 29, 2013, Rayat increased his holdings in RenovaCare, Inc. with an investment of $1,505,000.
