Hanggao Observatory

Hanggao Observatory (, abbreviated HGO), is an amateur astronomy organization in Hangzhou, China. It was founded in 2001 on the basis of the amateur astronomy group of Hangzhou High School.

The Hanggao Observatory has organized members to participate in the "Expedition of Solar Eclipse" in Gongpoquan, Gansun in August 2008, and has also made several observations, such as the transit of Venus on 8 June 2004 and the solar eclipse on 22 July 2009. So The Hanggao Observatory is widely considered as an influential students' amateur astronomy organization in China.

Observatories and stations

  • Headquarters: Located in Hangzhou High School, Hangzhou, China. The record of sunspots and the observation of chromosphere (H-Alpha) are mainly done there.
  • Tianhuangping Observation Base: Located in Anji County, Zhejiang, China. Movable-equipment-based optical observations are mainly performed there.
    • Remote Experimental Telescope (RET) (under planning): Located in Tianhuangping Observation Base,20 cm of aperture.
  • Qianjiang Observatory/Planetarium (under planning): Located in Hangzhou High School's new campus near Qiantang River. A 1-meter radio telescope and a space theatre are planned to be constructed there.
