Handa family

Handa family Handa (Punjabi: ਹਾਂਡਾ, ہانڈا; Hindi: हाँडा) is a prominent Khatri, Kshatriya clan originating from the Punjab region of India and Pakistan. They originate in Batala of Punjab in India. Handas are all Punjabi's and are Hindus, Sikhs and Muslims. Many Handa's trace their origin to the former Indian and now Pakistani districts of Punjab: Lahore, Gujranwala, and Gujrat. Lakhanwal Khas and Jalalpur Jattan are two towns within the Gujrat district that many Handa's trace their ancestry to. After the India-Pakistan independence many Handa's had left their native homes in Pakistan and relocated to various parts of Northern India. Many Handa's can be found in regions like Punjab, Delhi, Uttarpradesh, Haryana, Kashmir and Rajasthan. Some Handa families may also be found in mid and southern parts of India; especially those families that are a part of the Indian armed forces.

History

The majority of Handas are Hindus and Sikhs. They are descendants of the Suryavansha or Solar Dynasty (Sūrya-vaṃśa). This dynasty is one of the oldest and largest Kshatriya dynasties of India. The Solar Dynasty is also known as Ādityavanśa (आदित्यवंश), Mitravanśa (मित्रवंश), Arkavanśa (अर्कवंश) Some have also linked the Handa clan with the Kambojas, and identified them as being one of the direct descendants. The Kambojas were an extremely ancient and a prominent Kshatriya tribe of north-west India, attested in the Samaveda, Atharvaveda, Yajurveda, Mahabharata, Valmiki Ramayana, numerous Puranas, Manusmriti and a host other ancient Sanskrit and Pali texts.

We are informed by numerous ancient Sanskrit and Pali texts like Ashtadhyayi of Pāṇini,[1] Manusmriti,[2] Mahabharata,[3] Kautiliya's Arthashastra,[4] Harivamsa,[5] Vayu Purana,[6] Brahmanda Purana[7] and several other authorities that the ancestors of the modern Kambojas, in ancient times, were prominent Kshatriyas[8] and were established in the Kshatriya-Dharama as a warriors and a rulers.[9][10] They have been stylized as Rajaniyas as well as Kshatriyas in these ancient texts.

The Handas, alongside other Kshatriya warrior clans, have played a crucial part in shaping India's Aryan history. Aside from a very rich and prominent past in India, Handas can now be found in many parts of the world. Many Handa families can be found residing in England, Canada, Australia and the United States.

Handa's role in mughal rule

There is mention of a warrior clan during the Mughal Period in India, by the name of HADA. The HADA were a Rajput clan in Rajputana (now Rajasthan) and were said to be the bravest and most loyal to the soil. This clan was later disbanded and got dispersed throughout India. Those who went to Gujrat in the Punjab were called "Handa", those who went to Maharashtra were called "Hande", who went to Kashmir called "Handoo" and those who went to Haryana as "Hudda/ Hooda".
