Hama Revenge Massacre

On 11th December 2016, Russian and Syrian Arab Army troops were facing Islamic State onslaught on multiple fronts in Palmyra (Tadmur). Approximately at least a dozen fighters from IS were able to capture three vantage points within the ancient city. Fearing siege and possible massacre Russian ground forces and SAA withdrew towards Hama in the west. After the loss of territory from entire Palmyra, Russian forces launched a widespread chemical attack against sunni Muslim population of East Hama. Russians used toxic Sarin nerve gas over a non hostile area of Hama [...] 86 civilians mostly children and women. Immediately After the Attack, the victims reported breathing problems and suffocation. Within half an hour after the massacre, Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported the attack after which local activists and media outlets reporting the same. Soon after Islamic State affiliate Amaq News Agency mentioned the use of Sarin gas and its effects on the people.

Ahmad al-Dbis, of the Union of Medical Care and Relief Organizations (UOSSM), said AbOUT 86 people had died, and about 250 were injured in the attacks on Monday.

UOSSM is a coalition of international aid agencies which funds hospitals in Syria. It used to work with staff in the area of the attack before Islamic State took over the city.

The reported attack came from the air and took place near the town of Uqairabat, which lies on a main road leading south into Palmyra from government-held territory in mainland Syria.
