Hakoah Cernăuți

Hakoah Cernăuți was a Jewish football club based in Cernăuți, in the historical region of Bukovina, when the city was part of Romania. The club competed in the Cernăuți District Championship and was the regional champion in the 1925–26 season, qualifying for the final tournament of the Romanian national championship.

History

Hakoah was one of the Jewish sporting associations active in Cernăuți during the interwar period. A historical account of the Jewish community of Bukovina describes Hakoah as a sports association with a strong football section that regularly competed for leading positions in the local championship.

Sources differ on the club's precise foundation date. RSSSF lists Hakoah Cernăuți as active from 1908, while other historical compilations describe the club as having been re-established around 1920 as the 1. Jüdischer Sport- und Turn-Verein Hakoah Czernowitz.

In 1925, the club was known as Hakoah Cernăuți following the adoption of Romanian-language club names in the regional football administration.

1925–26 regional championship

Hakoah won the Cernăuți District Championship in the 1925–26 season, becoming the representative of Cernăuți in the final tournament of the Romanian national championship.

In the national championship, Hakoah faced Fulgerul Chișinău in the quarter-finals. The match was played on 12 July 1926 and ended in a 1–0 defeat for Hakoah.

Hakoah's qualification for the national championship was part of the regional qualification system used in Romanian football before the introduction of a nationwide league structure. The regional champions represented their districts in the final tournament for the Romanian championship.

Later years

Hakoah remained one of the leading clubs in the Cernăuți district during the late 1920s and early 1930s. In the 1929–30 season, the club finished fourth in the Cernăuți district championship with seven wins, three draws and four defeats in 14 matches. Hakoah scored 28 goals and conceded 23.

In the 1930–31 season, Hakoah finished third in the Cernăuți district championship, with six wins, three draws and five defeats from 14 matches. The club scored 27 goals and conceded 22.
