Gyoran ji

Gyoran ji (=Temple Gyoran, 魚藍寺) is a temple which exists in 4-chome, Mita, Minato, Tokyo in Japan.

It is located in the mountain side of Gyoran zaka (「魚藍坂」=Gyoran slope) of Tuki no Misaki「月の岬」. The formal name is Suigetuin Gyoran ji「水月院魚藍寺」."

Origin of the name

Since the principal image is Gyoran Kanzeon Bosatu「魚藍観世音菩薩」 (The Kannon image「観音像」 whose figure is the maiden tied the hair to the topknot of a Chinese mode「唐様」), this name was attached.
There is a tale of the following times of Tang「唐」 in China. The Buddha「仏陀」 appeared in a beautiful maiden's figure, selling the fish put into the bamboo basket, and spread Buddhism「仏法」. The sculpture was made based on this wonderful story.
