Gustin (clothing company)
Gustin is an American denim and apparel brand known for its direct-to-consumer business model and for producing jeans and casualwear using crowdfunded production runs. The company emphasizes selvedge denim, limited-batch manufacturing, and domestic production.
History
Gustin was founded in 2005 by Josh Gustin and Stephen Powell. Initially operating as a small denim label, the company gained wider attention in 2013 after launching a successful crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter to finance its production model.
The Kickstarter campaign marked a shift away from traditional wholesale distribution toward a direct-to-consumer approach, in which customers fund specific products before they are manufactured. This model allowed Gustin to reduce inventory risk and offer products at lower prices than comparable premium denim brands.
Products
Gustin produces denim jeans, shirts, jackets, and other casual apparel. Many of its jeans use selvedge denim sourced from mills in Japan, the United States, and Italy, and are cut and sewn in the United States.
Business model
Gustin’s business model centers on crowdfunding production. New designs are presented to customers for backing, and only those that reach a funding threshold proceed to manufacturing. This system is intended to reduce waste and excess inventory while aligning production with consumer demand.
Manufacturing
The company states that its garments are manufactured in the United States, with denim products typically cut and sewn in California facilities. Fabrics are sourced from both domestic and international mills specializing in premium denim.
