When Gursher Singh Harika chose to take up lawn tennis, he showed the boldness to go against the grain. In his native district, Mansa, traditional sports like kabaddi and wrestling are very popular. His decision to go off the beaten track was supported wholeheartedly by his family and friends. It has worked wonders, as Gursher is a rising star in The INDIAN tennis firmament today.

Born on October 20, 1988, 17-year-old Gursher bagged the under-18 boys singles title in Adhgabat, Turkmenistan, in an ITF Grade 5 tennis meet in October this year. He also reached the doubles final in the event with Neil Rajpal of Canada.

Sky is the limit for Gursher, who is keen to gain valuable points by playing as many international ranking tournaments as he can

Gursher Singh Harika was in Class VI when the Chandigarh Lawn Tennis Association selected him under its talent hunt scheme in 1999. Seven years later, this Mansa boy topped the alternative list of the Australian Open 2006 (juniors) at Melbourne in January and was at number 52 on the alternative list of Wimbledon (juniors) as on June 2 this year. Gursher Singh Harika has performed well in international tennis tournaments for juniors in recent years

Tennis player to attend NCAA Student-Athlete Development Conference By Paul Helgren : Friday, May 1st, 2009

Harika Sophomore men’s tennis player Gursher Harika has been selected to represent The University of Toledo at the 2009 NCAA Student-Athlete Development Conference May 24-27 at Disney’s Yacht and Beach Club Resorts in Lake Buena Vista, Fla.

Harika, an interdisciplinary studies major in University College from Mansa, India, is one of 700 student-athletes chosen among a candidate pool of about 2,000 nominations from NCAA Division I, II and III institutions. Other Rocket student-athletes nominated were alternate Lyndsey Holt (women’s volleyball), Molly Cornwell (women’s soccer) and Jean-Hubert Trahan (men’s golf).

“It’s great to see ‘G-man’ land this incredible opportunity,” said Head Men’s Tennis Coach Al Wermer. “This guy is the most articulate and resourceful young man you can imagine. He has remarkable leadership traits beyond his years.”

The 13th annual conference will provide NCAA student-athletes with a forum to openly discuss issues that may affect them on their campuses and in their communities, while also providing an opportunity to enhance their leadership, communication, and decision-making and problem-solving skills. This leadership opportunity also promotes better communication among student-athletes, coaches, administrators, faculty and communities.

The conference consists of daily exercises and activities to help the student-athletes develop as individuals and as contributing members to a group.
