Grytsje Kingma

Grytsje Kingma-Zantema (Kimswert, 1964) is a Frisian singer from St. Jansga. She grew up in Kimswert, the youngest daughter of the headmaster and employee of the Afuk, Adam Zantema. The family moved to Franeker when she was twelve. She subsequently lived in Baarn and Leeuwarden, and with her husband in Grouw and Kollum. Currently she resides in St. Jansga.

Kingma began to play the guitar when she was 14, because she wanted to accompany her own singing. She later played and sang with various groups. After her studies at Simon Vestdyk in Baarn in institutional work, with specialties in music, she was activities leader at a day care center for people with comprehension disabilities in Redezum. At 25, household and job in order, she took up the MusicAL thread again.

Vocals, Guitar, Conducting, Writing

In 2002 she took voice lessons and amateur choral conducting courses at Rinkelbom with Gerben van der Veen. In 2003 she set out with a senior citizen’s choir Heremastate, followed in 2006 with a women’s’ choir Bruzenije in Joure. In 2005 she began the musical trio Skarnoaten with Limmert Mink and Pier de Wilde, and with whom she performed vocals and played the guitar until the summer of 2010. At the end of 2008 Kingma took a course in lyric writing at the Tresoar and was discovered by Jurjen van der Meer of Terkapel, which lead to producing her own Frisian songs.

More than 20 Frisian songs are the result. Some are made for Ferseferiaasje, (the booklet with purposeful poems that are used by FeRstival, the purpose contest for children in continuing education). One poem was used in the Lyrische Courant of the Leeuwarden newspaper (April 2009). In addition, a poem was placed in the Flying Crow, the publication of the KFFB (Christian Frisian People’s Library). She made a melody to the poem of Atze Bosch.

She worked with the YKFE, a translation group, which is working on the translation of the songs for the new Liedboek voor de Kerken (from the Dutch), which will appear in 2012. Together with Atze Bosch she is doing the translation of the Evangelische Liedbundel. She performs alone, but also together with the Swiss violinist Rob de Jardin from Amsterdam. Different songs are also to be found on YouTube. Grytsje Kingma sings in Frisian and maintains contact with the Council of the Frisian Movement (Ried fan de Fryske Beweging).
