In the year of 1990, a Socialist Association of Working People of Bosnia and Herzegovina has grown into Democratic Party of Socialists of B&H (note of the translator: known as DSS). At the Convention, held on 26th May 1993, the Party adopted a new Program and Statute and has changed the name into Citizens’ Democratic Party of B&H (note of the translator: known as GDS). The Party has held seven Assemblies of GDS B&H from 1990 to date, as follows: 1993, 1996, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2002, and 2004, when managerial staff was elected, as well as changes and amendments to the Program and Statute have been performed.

On the Elections held in 1990, GDS (at the time named as DSS), won one independent place in the Council of Citizens of B&H Assembly, 5 places from joint lists with SDP of B&H in the Council of Municipalities of B&H Assembly. According to these results, GDS (DSS) had had in 41 municipalities from one to 14 board members, and four members in the Assembly of the town of Sarajevo. From 1992 to 1996, GDS B&H in coalition with SDP has three members of the Presidency of B&H. From 1997, GDS has representatives in 51 municipalities of Bosnia and Herzegovina, out of which 17 in RS and 34 in the Federation of B&H. From 1997, GDS together with the Coalition CD B&H has one representative in the National Assembly of RS. Since 1998, GDS B&H together with Coalition CD B&H has two representatives in the House of Representatives of the Parliament of Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, one in the House of Peoples of the Parliament of Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina, one in the National Assembly of RS and one in the House of Representatives in the B&H Parliament. Also, GDS has one representative in the each of 6 Cantonal Assemblies (Sarajevo, Gorazde, Tuzla, Herzegovina-Neretva and Middle-Bosnia Canton). GDS B&H participated in local elections in the year of 2000, in the alliance with Liberal – Democratic Party of B&H, under the name of Liberal – Civil Coalition. The President of the Coalition was Ibrahim Spahic. On the General Elections in 2000, GDS B&H participated independently and with SDP, S B&H, LDS, Party of Pensioners, BPS, SNSD, HSS, NHI and Republicans formed an Alliance for Changes, and ensured representation in Parliamentary Assembly of Federation of B&H, Government of FB&H and House of Peoples of the Parliamentary Assembly of B&H. On the elections in 2002, GDS has received mandate in Parliamentary Assembly of B&H. On the Local Elections in 2004, GDS B&H participated independently and ensured mandates in municipal councils of Doboj East, Breza, Hadzici, Kalesija and Banovici.
