Gheorghe I. Taşcă
Gheorghe I. Taşcă (b. 1847 in Bălăbăneşti, Galaţi, Romania, d. 1935 in Bălăbăneşti, Galaţi, Romania was a Romanian landowner and philantropist. He is considered to be the patriarch of the present day Taşcă family.
Gheorghe I. Taşcă was part of the Moldavian landed gentry his great-grandfather being mazil Stan I. Taşcă (1750-1810).
His grandfather, Petre S. Taşcă (1780-1838) became Orthodox priest, vocation which was also followed by his father, Ioan P. Taşcă (1820-1884). He married, Maria (Marghioala) Dabija (1849-1945). Maria's paternal grandfather was mazil Gavriliţă Dabija, and her maternal grandfather was Captain Dumitrache Taşcă.
Gheorghe Taşcă studied at the cyrilic school of the Sfântul Nicolae church of Bălăbăneşti, and continued his studies in Bârlad, graduating in 1864. He started work as civil servant. After marrying on November 3, 1866, he settled in Bălăbăneşti. Starting his activity as tax collector, he continued as communal and county counselor. At his death, he bequeathed his property to the commune, for the construction of a school. The school, constructed under the supervision of his son Gheorghe Taşcă, was inaugurated on September 15, 1935 and received the name of "Gheorghe and Maria Taşcă School".
In 1948 the communist authorities eliminated Gheorghe and Maria Taşcă from the name of the school. The school's initial name was restored in 1994. At present it is the coordinating gymnasial school of the area.
