GeneRally (computer game)
GeneRally is a freeware top-down view racing game developed by Hannu and Jukka Räbinä where the player can drive with up to 6 cars, with one or more human drivers using same keyboard, and with AI drivers. PCGamer, in an issue about free PC games, described it as "A minimalist Micro Machines" . The latest version is 1.05, which was released on December 22, 2003 . The game has an active community at GRRF, where it is hosted. It is possible to create new custom tracks with the TrackEditor that comes with the game. Every month the community sets up Track of Month , where the members of the community vote for the best tracks published over the month. Users can also create new cars with the Car Editor, which can be downloaded from this website.
Competitions
There are three types of races: normal race where a player drives against AI racers. The driver with fastest race time wins. This is the most common type. In a hotlap competition the driver has to drive alone, without AI drivers, attempt to set the fastest single lap. The driver with fastest lap time wins. Time trial is a sort of combined version of race and hotlap; a player drives race without AI drivers, trying to set as short of a race time as possible. The time trial can also be only one lap/run, for example on a rally stage. The driver with fastest time wins.
For any races a driver participates in, he receives points for the GeneRally World Ranking (GWR). Every month the driver who has collected the most points from races wins the monthly GWR.
The community of GeneRally has created a login system where they can race against each other even though GeneRally lacks online play. A driver who has joined a competition receives a password, used to make the "login". Usually the driver can practice on a version of the track used in the race before logging in. After the drivers enter their password, they receive the final version of the track which is used to drive the race. The drivers have a time limit during which they must send an email with specified files. After the driver has done his race on the track, he has to save the race as a replay so that the organizer of the competition can watch it afterwards. The driver also has to take a screenshot when the results of the race show up. Then the driver has to send the files to the competition organizer by email. For a normal race, the driver has to send the replay of the race and the screenshot. For a hotlap in some competitions the driver has to send only the track file he used, but in other competitions a replay and/or screenshot is required. For time trial the driver has to send the replay and a screenshot, and sometimes also the track file.
There are also different types of logins. The most common is the normal login, where player have time to drive the race, plus few minutes for time to send the email. In a surprise login the player does not know the track that they will race on before the login. In a surprise login the user has time to practice a little bit on the tracks, drive the actual race, and send the email. In a relaxed login the user has a lot more time than needed for the race itself.
