GauTV
GauTV (Gauteng Television) is a community channel that is located in Johannesburg, South Africa. It launched in October 2015 after a 3 year battle to obtain a licence.
History
In 2012, GauTV was facing a legal challenge with ICASA after the broadcaster was denied an operating licence.
Mzansi Community Satellite, trading as GauTV sought the licence from ICASA to provide satellite-based television to Gauteng viewers. It says the authority's decision to keep not to grant it a licence was unfair and not keeping with the relevant legislation.
In 2014, Alex TV (also known as LX TV) a rival station catering to the northern part of Johannesburg launched on Openview in April offering informative and educational entertainment as well as current affairs.
In 2015, after running for a year Alex TV closed down in the same month it launched. In October of that year, GauTV finally got its own channel through MultiChoice's DStv platform broadcasting from 06:00 - 18:00 (12 hours a day) where most of the population aren't available during that time.
By March 2017, the channel increased its broadcasting hours from 12 hours to 24 hours.
