Galway Intermediate Hurling Club Championship
The Galway Intermediate Hurling Championship is a hurling competition for GAA clubs in Gawlay in Ireland. This is a second tier competition with the winners and runners-up being promoted to play in the Galway Senior Hurling Championship the following year. The winners also represent Galway in the Connacht Intermediate Club Hurling Championship
History
The Intermediate grade was introduced in 1949 with Kilrickle winning the first final. The competition was played for until 1953 when it was suspended. It was introduced again in 1959 and continued to be played until 1967 when it was again suspended until 1970 when it was again introduced. It has been played for each year since. The winners of the Intermediate championship are promoted to Senior but since 2003 the beaten finalists have also been promoted. The only year that this was not the case was in 1998 when Craughwell were promoted. They were the beaten finalists having lost to Athenry but because Athenry already had a senior team so they couldn't have a second one. The Galway Hurling Board decided to leave the competitions as they were but Craughwell objected. Pearses were the team to be relegated so a compromise was struck where Craughwell played Pearses in a promotion/relegation game and the winners were promoted.
