Gabriel Project
The Gabriel Project is a Christian crisis pregnancy counseling service based in the United States. The organization promotes parishioner based counseling for pregnant women. This service is provided by church volunteers, known within the Project as Gabriel Angels, a name sourced from the biblical character of the Archangel Gabriel. The Project endorses a pro-life stance, advertising in front of member church or community centers with a generic sign that states: "We believe in the sanctity of human life and will help any woman in need."
History
The Project began in 1991 in Corpus Christi, Texas, spreading to 16 participating states by 2007, as well as contacts in Washington, D.C. and the Virgin Islands.
Coverage
The organizational reach of the Gabriel Project predominantly focuses on local newspapers and community bulletin boards for support, though it has received television, mainstream news-site, and major newspaper coverage. The topical nature of Christian pregnancy advice, in particular in discussing abortion, is reflected in the varied coverage of the Gabriel Project. Conservative news-site WorldNetDaily places the Gabriel Project in line with Christian efforts of protecting young women and families, whereas the Austin Chronicle labeled the crisis services provided by the Project as ineffective and over-funded.
