Frances Broomfield
Frances Broomfield (born 29 August 1951) is a British painter who exhibits with the Portal Painters.
Frances Broomfield was born and brought up in Warrington. She began painting professionally in 1972 after leaving Newport Art School and moving to London. She now lives in Crewe, Cheshire.
Her paintings have been described as "sophisticated naive" and she is represented by the UK's foremost gallery showing this kind of work. She presents us with an idiosyncratic view of the world, through her images of both real and imaginary creatures, myths, archetypes and visual puns. Her latest painting Harpo/Harpocrates takes its inspiration from the odd coincidence that Harpo Marx The Silent Marx Brother shares a similar name and attributes with Harpocrates the god of mystical silence, the Greek form of the Egyptian god Harpa-Khruti (Horus the Child).
Frances' paintings are on display around the world, from public museums in Glasgow, Guildford and Warrington, to private collections in the UK, Europe, Australia and USA. Her work has been reproduced on posters, greetings cards, bookjackets, TV, magazines and journals, and more. She is listed in the Art World Directory, The Dictionary of Artists in Britain Since 1945,(Buckman 1998)The Lexikon Der Phantastischen Kunstler (Habarta 2009) and A Singular Vision - 50 Years of British Painting at the Portal Gallery (Wilder 2009 Prestel). She has received awards from Pollock-Krasner Foundation New York, The London Arts Board, Oppenheim-John Downes Trust London, NorthWest Arts Manchester, and others.
