Foundation for sustainable development
The Foundation for Sustainable Development (FSD) is a non-profit international development organization based in San Francisco, California. FSD partners with grassroots organizations in the developing world, Providing them with human, capital, and technological resources to help them achieve their goals.
History
Alicia Robb founded FSD in 1995, and the organization started International Operations in 1996 in Nicaragua with one summer internship program and $1000 in grants. In 2005, FSD sent more than 200 program participants to eight countries and granted nearly $60,000 to more than 100 local organizations in these countries.
Current Programs
Today, FSD operates intern and short-term volunteering programs in eight countries: Argentina, Bolivia, Ecuador, India, Kenya, Nicaragua, Peru, and Uganda. The organization itself is officially not affiliated with any government or religious group, although it does partner with grassroots organizations which May Be affiliated with certain religions or political groups. FSD concentrates on seven issue areas:
- Community Development
- Environment
- Health
- Human Rights
- Micro-Enterprise
- Women's Empowerment
- Youth and Education
Internship Program
FSD provides qualified college students, graduates, and professionals with internships with grassroots organizations in Latin America, Africa, and Asia. The internships concentrate on one of FSD's issue areas, and include a family homestay, orientation and debriefing sessions, grant making, and program support.
Short Term Programs
FSD also offers Enrichment Trips, Adventure Travel for the Service-minded, Alternative Spring Breaks, Summer service trips, Study tours, and year round short term volunteer programs.
