Foreign Language Student Residence
Brigham Young University's Foreign Language Student Residence, or FLSR, (pronounced "flisser") is considered on-campus housing and focuses on intensive language learning programs for German, Chinese, Spanish, Portuguese, Japanese, Russian, Arabic, and French. Hebrew, ASL, Italian, and Korean apartments have been occasionally offered. Apartments are typically referred to as "houses," a holdover from the days before the current FLSR facility was constructed in 1991, when language programs were located in separate off-campus houses. Thus, residents will refer to "the German house," for example, even though they are referring to the collected apartments which currently house German-speaking residents.
Language learners live with a native speaker and commit to speaking only the target language for all interactions within the apartment. Students gather on weeknights in their respective programs to eat dinner and develop language skills. Monthly cultural presentations further enrich the linguistic experience. As most residents are members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the complex comprises a BYU student ward or congregation, with Sunday School held in the various languages and all other church meetings held in English.
The FLSR complex lies at 1950 North Temple View Drive at the northeast corner of the BYU campus in Provo, Utah, directly across the street from the Missionary Training Center. It consists of 5 buildings: four apartment buildings centered around one building for commons rooms and offices. The central building also doubles as a meeting place for church services of the BYU 64th Ward of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
