Finey's Final Siren
Finey's Final Siren is a talkback show which airs on SEN 1116, an AM radio station in Melbourne, Australia. It previews after AFL matches during the season on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. The show is hosted by Mark Fine, who is affectionately referred to by his callers as 'Finey'.
Program
The program runs for approximately 2 hours with news on the hour, and commercials less frequent than other programs on the station. The introductory song is Kick by INXS, and the show starts and finishes with a siren, synonymous at AFL matches. The excerpt from the song contains the words "Sometimes you kick. Sometimes you get kicked" then is followed by a saxophone solo.
Host
Mark Fine - more commonly known as 'Finey', is the show's only presenter. He is a long suffering St Kilda Football Club supporter who sometimes shows bias. He is experienced in the media industry with experience as an Australian Open radio commentator, has a degree in Marketing and is Melbourne Victory ground announcer.
Controversy
- April, 2007 - Mark attacked Richmond Football Club champion, SEN 1116 presenter, and AFL rules committee member Kevin Bartlett as he instigated the controversial new hands in the back rule. Fine told listeners to 'Send an email' amongst other things, to Bartlett on his program Hungry for Sport, after the rule ironically disallowed Richmond Football Club veteran Matthew Richardson a match winning goal against the Essendon Football Club, after he pushed defender Mal Michael in the back.
- July, 2007 - Fine attacked close friend and Herald Sun journalist Jon Ralph, for his comments that the AFL commission would be happy if Australia lost to Thailand in the AFC Asian Cup. Fine called Ralph a 'Myopic journalist' among other things. Australia defeated Thailand 4-0 to ProgresS to the quarter finals against Japan.
Co-Hosts
- Dr. Peter Brukner - An experienced medical expert, particularly in sport medicine. Brukner gives his prognosis of injuries that happened during the round and reports on the Sunday program. He is involved with the Australian Soccer team - The Socceroos.
- "Postman" - whose real name is Brad, the postman reports on what fans post on site forums related to AFL, such as bigfooty.com. He also gives his insight on other matters. His appearances are at random and only reports for less than a minute.
Listeners
The show is solely talkback, with callers generating all discussion. It is mainly aimed at AFL, with games on the day of the show usually being the main points of discussion from the listeners. Listeners also have the options of also to SMS and email their views into the studio.
"Finey" is commonly referred to as being the supporters man gaining many loyal listeners of the show. However he has his cynics.
Recurring Callers
- Jim, Hawthorn - A passionate Hawthorn Football Club supporter. Jim rings in most NiGHTS on the day Hawthorn play, especially if they win. He is known for his distinct Scottish accent.
Guests
The show has seen some guests involved from time to time, with appearances very rarely. Fine 'opens the doors' to loyal listeners who stake their case by emailing him and being a consistent caller.
- July 21, 2007 - Anthony, Maribyrnong - 15 years old at time of broadcast. Is a Richmond supporter, whom like many other guests, is a regular caller. He is an aspiring journalist and radio presenter. He currently reads news and presents radio on Melbourne's Student Youth Network.
