In the fictional Wing Commander universe, the Terran Confederation started deploying many new fighters for their fleets by the year 2680, including the F-110 Wasp Interceptor Fighter. The Wasp interceptor is a small point-defence interceptor fighter that serves as a role in carrier group defences. Wasps are usually launched only when enemy bombers are in attack range on the carrier group. In Wing Commander: Prophecy, Lance Casey and several other Confed pilots were sent out in Wasps to intercept enemy attackers that were targeting the TCS Midway.
The Wasp interceptors are moderately equipped. The standard weapon arsenal for a Wasp included two Tachyon cannons, two Mass-driver guns, two heat-seeker missiles, six Image Recognition missiles, and four Swarmer missile pods. The Swarmer missile pods fires seven guided rocket pods and requires lock on its target for it to be effective. If Wasps are assigned long-range missions, this ship can make use of a detachable booster rocket that gets it to its destination more quickly without using afterburners. The boosters have a faster acceleration rate than afterburner velocity. Once expended, the booster is automatically jettisoned, which results in minor acceleration improvement and manoeuvrability for part of the fighter that is still being piloted. The Wasp's specialty is to destroy enemy torpedo bombers but it is also effective against most fighter-class targets.
