Excel (festival)

Excel is the annual national technical-management festival of Model Engineering College, Kochi, India. The event is held over a period of three days and is conducted in association with the IEEE chapter of the college. This festival, conducted normally in the month of January/February, has science, technology and management based competitions, lectures, demonstrations and workshops lined up on all the three days. This fest is completely organized by the students of the college and provides a platform where college students can compete and showcase their technical skills and management capabilities

This fest has been held every year since its inception in 2001. Each year's Excel is named with its year as a suffix. So the very first Excel was called Excel 2K1 and the latest EDition, Excel 2K9, was the 9th edition.

Excel 2K8 was held from 31st January to 2nd February 2008
Excel 2K9 was held from 23 January to 25 January 2009

Events Overview

The events at Excel primarily cover areas in Electronics, Computer Science and Biomedical engineering (as these are the major departments of the college). There are events in applied sciences, general engineering and management as well. These events can be classified into the categories mentioned here. The names of the individual events change from year to year and hence this section provides only an even overview.

Electronics Events

Electronics events include those which involve designing, assembling and testing. Some of the events held at past Excels include:

  • De-fuse: An event where a simulated bomb circuit is provided where the winner is the one who defuses the bomb the fastest.
  • ''Wave cloning: A problem statement is given which is to generate a particular waveform on the display panel of a Cathode Ray Oscilloscope(CRO)
  • Best Hardware Engineer: An event which covers all aspects of an Electronics engineer viz. problem solving, circuit designing, conceptual clarity and clear communication abilities.
  • Robotics events: The robotic events organized give robot specifications and the arena of competition. Some of the events held in the past include Line Tracer(a robot that traces routes which are part of the arena), Robo-soccer(a pair of robots-scorer and goalkeeper play soccer against an opponent pair), Sumo-bot (robot-on-robot wrestling) etc.
