The Essex Police Special Constabulary is the part-time volunteer Police Force of Essex Police. As of June 2008 it consists of approximately 471 special constables, however Essex Police have recently announced plans to expand the Special Constabulary to 1000 Officers by 2010. Once Special Constables have finished their foundation training, they take the Police Oath at an attestation ceremony at the Essex Police Headquarters in Chelmsford. At this event, they are issued with their Warrant Card and then they enjoy the full powers and privileges of a Constable throughout England and Wales and adjacent Waters. Prior to 1 April 2007, members of the Essex Police Special Constabulary only had jurisdiction within the Essex Police District and adjacent force Districts: Kent Police, Metropolitan Police Service, Cambridgeshire Constabulary, Hertfordshire Constabulary and Suffolk Constabulary.

Essex Police Specials receive no payment for duties they perform. However, they can claim travelling and subsistence expenses as well as an allowance for footwear. Essex Police Specials must undertake a minimum of 16 hours of operational duties per month; Many specials do more hours than this basic requirement.
