Eneke Tambe Bechem

Eneke Tambe Bechem is a Cameroonian academic, plant scientist and university administrator. She has served as the Registrar of the University of Buea since her appointment by presidential decree in August 2021, becoming the first woman to hold this position at the institution.

Early life and education

Bechem was among the first cohort of students admitted to the University of Buea when it began to admit students in 1993.

She later earned advanced degrees from the University of Buea and completed a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) at the University of Aberdeen in Scotland, United Kingdom.

Academic career

Bechem is a faculty member in the Department Of Plant Science at the University of Buea, where her research includes plant ecology, plant pathology, and biodiversity. She has co-authored several scientific publications on topics ranging from fungi and nematodes to plant diversity in Cameroon’s ecosystems. Among her research contributions are work on the diversity of ectomycorrhizae in humid forests of South Cameroon, and the phylogenetic analysis of plant pathogens in oil palm plantations.

Her work also appears as co-authorship in agricultural field surveys and crop studies related to vegetable and okra production in Cameroon’s Fako Division, reflecting multidisciplinary engagement with plant agriculture and rural livelihoods.

Administrative career

Bechem began her professional career at the University of Buea in 2008 and has held progressively senior administrative roles:

  • Acting Head of Service, Admissions (January 2008–January 2011)
  • Head of Service, Admissions (January 2011–January 2018)
  • Head of Division, Admissions and Records (January 2018–August 2021)

On 20 August 2021, she was appointed Registrar of the University of Buea by presidential decree and was officially installed in the role during a ceremony on 26 August 2021.

As Registrar, Bechem is responsible for institutional governance functions, student records, and the coordination of key administrative departments within the university’s executive leadership, which includes vice-chancellors and deans.

Bechem has played a public role in university governance, including announcing changes such as new matriculation robe requirements for students in November 2024 and revisions to graduation schedules.
