Edsel Pono
Edsel Reporas Pono is an educator, programmer, inspirational speaker, network engineer and a book author. He contributed and changed the educational system and the chief adviser of a discipline that provides free computer education to the economically-disadvantaged individuals in San Carlos City, Negros Occidental, Philippines.
Private Life
Edsel Pono is by nature a Filipino with a spanish blood, where his family originally came from Cebu, particularly in Pinamungajan. He was raised in San Carlos City, Negros Occidental, Philippines. A Christian man known as "Sir Ed" who instills in his speech and writings a trademark "we are destined to become a leader" calling in Providing a quality education to the impoverished individuals in the Island of Negros. Edsel contributed in the educational system in San Carlos City and known for his competency-based curriculum. A former Director of Saint Joseph CLC, a computer education, which he later resign and help establish a 100% free computer education for the poor through Alternative Learning System (ALS), making it the first and only free computer education that caters 240 less privileged learners year after year in the Philippines. As he deeply in touch with his Christian Faith, inspired by his uncle Fr. Carlito Pono,a parish priest of the Our Lady of Guadalupe, with the help of his spiritual family, the Victory Christian Fellowship, he later created an inspirational book named after himself --- "EDchanting". EDchanting reveals his story and prophesies given by the American Missionary Nick Harrang and Philippine multi-awarded actress Coney Reyes in the year 1997. He is a frequent resource speaker and guest lecturer in several organizations in the Philippines. Ed is married to Stella Grace with three daughters namely Juliana Liz-Marie, Kirsten Jill and Jan Felizealle.
Early Childhood
Edsel Pono was born on the 7th of April 1979, and was the youngest of three. His elder brother was named Roy Ian and his sister named Mareazel Pono-Sen. His father and mother’s names are Florizel Caballero Pono and Dolores Vuelga-Pono, both in education sector. At the young age, he was battling with malicious critics, for he was aloof to people and afraid to mingle with them, for they were teasing him. He was often mistakenly accused as "weak duck" when young because of his gentleness and often stayed in the house beside his mom if his grandmother is away. As a sibling, Roy Ian, his older brother defended him and he encourages Ed to play basketball with his friends. With no so much experience on the game, Ed injured his arms and was become the laughing scene; it was then as well the turning point of Ed's life, seeing his brother fight towards those people who laugh in behalf of him.
Ed excelled in so many areas, became eloquent in his speech and won several 1st prizes in school oration competition. He was also became the representative of SCMCIES during the BoyScout General Competition in the year 1992. His art works such as paper painting and sketching is also recognized and acknowledged from the heads. He became part of the famous group who started the “SAYAWIT”, initialized and conceptualized by Colegio de Santo Tomas³, a Filipino combined words which means “sayaw, arte at awit” literally means sing, act and dance, where the group performs a variety of plays that combines dancing, singing, oration, speech and acting.
Education and Training
Pono earned technical certificates from Systems Institute of Technoloy (STI) as Computer Programmer in 1998, taken up Bachelor of Science in Management Information System (BS MIS) in Saint La Salle University, in 1998 but concentrated only the major subjects. He joined Saint Joseph Computer Learning Center and became a Director where he obtained his Certificates in CADD, Computer Technician, Animation and Web Designing thru Josrika Computer Training Center, Cebu, Philippines in 2002. With the help of his auntie, Dr. Blesilda Pono,a nuclear medicine doctor of the Cebu Doctors' Hospital in Cebu City, he obtained a Diploma in Network Engineering from the Institute of Technical and Further Education (TAFE) Tasmania, Australia in 2007.Although Edsel is not a professional teacher for he did not study and took Teaching course but he was trained in curriculum-based design by Technical Education and Skills Development (TESDA), Negros Occidental chapter in 2001 which then pioneered the inclusion of Speech and Personality Development competency in the school syllabus. He also teaches and trained classroom teachers under the umbrella of the Civil Service Commission, Philippines in 2004. He studied management at CAP Development Academy, Cebu City, Philippines, and took online course at University of the Philippines Open University.
