Economics Society of Calgary
Economics Society of Calgary (ESC) is a not-for-profit organization that hosts monthly luncheons and seminars for the business sector in Calgary. Guest speakers at the luncheons and seminars provide information relating to economic, oil and gas, electricity, regulatory and other pertinent public and private sector issues.
The ESC provides regular meetings for discussion and exchange of IDeaS in the area of economics. The mandate is to promote public awareness and understanding of current economic issues and problems, to further economic knowledge in the Calgary area in conjunction with institutions of higher learning, and to provide for the social fellowship of individuals with a common interest in the field of economics and business.
History
The ESC originally started as a chapter of the Economics Society of Alberta in 1965. In 1985 the Calgary chapter separated from the Economics Society of Alberta to become the Economics Society of Calgary.[1] The aim of this move was to put more focus on the interests of local businesses. Since 1985 the ESC has hosted numerous keynote speakers including Alberta Premier Ed Stelmach in 2007.[2]
Membership
The membership of the ESC consists mainly of professionals working in the Calgary area. Members come from many academic backgrounds and work in many different sectors with the majority being in the energy, financial, public, and/or academic sectors. The ESC has approximately 200 members.[3]
Administration
The ESC is run by a volunteer executive of 5-6 individuals. Executive members usually have an academic background in economics or are established in the business community with a strong interest in economic issues. In addition to the executive the ESC has liaisons with Calgary's post-secondary institutions including the University of Calgary and Mount Royal University as well as the University of Calgary's Society of Undergraduates in Economics[4].
Additional activities
The ESC is a supporter of the University of Calgary's Economics Mentorship Program and participates with other associations that have similar mandates.[5]
