Life and music career

Dub Deuce, born Tennail Vincent Williams, grew up in the Silverside Northtown Village neighborhood of Toledo in Ohio. He grew up without a father and was raised by his mother Rose Williams, who gave birth to him at the age of nineteen. Williams spent a lot of time at his grandmother's house with his seven aunts and uncles. He recalls, "My Uncle Tony told me, 'Imma show you the ropes. Its real out here and thees cats aint playing no games, so every time you come over here.. you rolling with me until moms pick you up. ' That's when I started adjusting to the streets a little bit."

Early career

Dub Deuce started rapping in the upstairs of his mother's house where he used turntables to record over instrumentals. In 1996, a friend introduced him to Don P. of The Ave who was organizing his label. It was the first time he entered a studio. Don P. taught him how to count bars, write choruses, structure songs, and make a record. Dub Deuce's first official appearance was on a song titled "Silverside" with the group Glass City Ridus on their 1996 album Side Up. He credited Don P. as an influence who helped him improve his ability to write hooks. He produced Dub Deuce's first album, however it was never released. In 1998, after losing contact with Don P., a New York Underground CEO PAPO took notice of Dub Deuce and signed him to Low Profile Records. He sent him to a studio in Upstate New York, where he produced twelve songs in a week. Eighteen tracks would have been included on his unofficially released album, Hands Down in 1998. But PAPO was arrested and sentenced to 15 to 25 years. He than hooked up with former Glass City Ridus member Locc and started a label called Silverside Entertainment.

Dub Deuce's popularity started to increase after the successful but controversial underground single "Hustle Legit", which he wrote in half an hour while in a car on his way home. The track explains how many artists claim to have sold or still sell drugs in attempt to live up to the D-Boy hype that has emerged in Hip Hop. He explained the reasoning behind the song's content as, "There’s a hundred underground artists that I meet all over the States in random places. None of them are on block doing any of the things that they rap about, you gotta separate yourself from that and make yourself relevant, unless that's the life you live."
