Dru Paxton McMillan

Andrew “Dru” Paxton McMillan (born 1974) is one of Europe’s leading independent video artists, specialising in the field of music videos and other promotional video pieces. He is the great, great grandson of the visionary Victorian engineer, Sir Joseph Paxton (1801-1865).

Born in Glasgow, Scotland but living for most of his childhood in cities around the world (Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Tokyo, Anchorage, Stavanger), he returned to the UK to study at the University of Glasgow (1991-1996) where he completed a Masters degree with Honours. His dissertation for graduation was a study of the work of German film maker, FW Murnau especially the use of German Expressionist styles in the set designs of his landmark film, Nosferatu.

Since graduating, McMillan has collaborated with numerous artists on short films and promotional video pieces, including Chris Cunningham and Rachel Sommers. His solo work includes adverts for German car-makers Audi and BMW, and videos for British musical artists including Goldfrapp and Massive Attack.

Described by Screen magazine as “one of the darker stars of video direction” McMillan is noted for his uncompromising use of graphic effects and his preference for working with members of the general public, instead of actors.

He currently lives in London and works on projects for clients around the world. He rarely gives interviews or attends screenings of his own work.
