Dream 9407

The Dream 9407 Chip is a DSP used in the Maxi64 Range of some Guillemot sound cards. It is a RISC based DSP capable of 50MIPS and is also a 64-channel hardware wavetable synthesizer. Its audio effects include Real Time fully adjustable reverb, echo, pitch shift and chrous. It is capable of fully 3D 4-channel audio output, and can play 8 standard WaveOut audio channels via 8 waveout windows drivers. A very powerful chip, first released in 1996 it has been discontinued. It was said by many that is was far ahead of its time and far better than other sound cards of that time (i.e Sound Blaster AWE64), offering a 85dB SNR. The card was later re-released as 'Maxi 64 Dynamic 3D' a cheaper version of the card supporting all the features of the original card. It included 2MB of onboard ram for the Roland Sound Canvas soundbank (The default soundbank supplied with the card) although this could be upgraded to 18MB by putting some 70ns 16MB 72-Pin EDO Memory into the ram slot of the card. Although the card has 2MB of onboard memory, the default soundbank that shipped with the card was only 978KB. This allowed for further improvement of the MIDI quality.
