Doug Lang
Doug Lang (born 1941) is a Welsh born poet and novelist, closely associated with the Washington School of Poets, as well as with of the Language group of poets.
Lang was born Swansea, Wales, and lived there, in Greece, and in London, before moving to Washington D.C. in 1973. He studied at Coleg Harlech in Wales , 1965-1967. He worked as a manual laborer at the Steel Company of Wales and as an administrator fro BBC Television News, among other things, before moving to the U.S. Since 1976, he has taught at the Corcoran College of Art & Design in Washington.
During the late 1970s, he directed The Folio Books reading series , and was involved in various publishing ventures, along with other original members of the Washington School group, such as Michael Lally, Terence winch, Tina Darragh, P, Inman, Lynne Dreyer, Bernard Welt, Phyllis Rosenzweig, Diane Ward, Donald Britton and Joan Retallack. That group is now well into its second generation, that has involved such poets as Rod Smith, Buck Downs, Heather Fuller, Mark Wallace, Tom Orange, K. Lorraine Graham, and Cathy Eisenhower. Poetry reading series at Bridge Street Books, Ruthless Grip (at the Pyramid Atlantic Art Center), and In Your Ear at DC/AC, have all helped maintain the traditions established in the 1970s.
Lang lives in Washington DC. He has family in Devon, England.
His books include the novel Freaks (New English Library, 1973), and the chapbooks, Hot Shot (Jawbone, 1977) Magic Fire Chevrolet (Titanic Books, 1980), and 3 novels (Primary Writing, 1983). He has been slow to publish, but a large collection of poems, 1973-2007 is forthcoming from Edge Books.
