Microsoft is currently developing a new API called Direct Physics. This will come as part of a future DirectX release. Direct Physics will likely be similar to current Physics API's, such as the PhysX engine from Ageia. API's like this make it easier to develop realistic 2D and 3D games, and real world modeling software.
