Derek “Rocco” Barnabei

Derek "Rocco" Barnabei (1967-2000) has been an American citizen, of Italian origins, condemned to the death penalty for a his presumed [...]. In September 1993, Barnabei was arrested for the presumed [...] of the student, of 17 years old, Sarah Wisnosky, happened near the river Lafayette (Virginia), violated and killed. Following the [...], they are made accurate knowledges of the victim, and it appeared really her boy's name Derek, with which which had spent some times, the last evening. Barnabei however it was not found at that time there, since he had departed from Norfolk to reach his mother in New Jersey. In the house of his mother, in fact, Barnabei received a phone call from the companions of the dormitory, that told him not to return, because the police was looking for him for the [...]; subsequently he discovered that the call had been made well before the police went to find Derek. At the end Barnabei was arrested without result and without also involving the other friend-students that cohabited with Barnabei, perhaps for the fact that showed always an ambiguous behavior. On the dead body of the girl they are made some examinations from which he discovers that it missed her clock and traces of Derek's sperm, which he has admitted to have had [...] relations with the fiancée; they were also found other biological traces that were not investigated. Years later, Barnabei required with insistence an esamination of the Dna, that they were effected but, oddly, disappeared mysteriously, for then to reappear later a lot of time. They arrived then subsequently some witnesses that affirmed to have been inclined to release unfavorable depositions to Derek, one of these the penologist Alan Dershowitz, that voluntarily offered him for the defense, defining how much happened “one of the biggest judicial abortions ever seen.” The mobilization grew, especially in Italy (but not only): they intervened for political Derek, the European parliament and even Pope John Paul II, to grant a little of indulgence to Barnabei. This was not enough and to Rocco was attributed the nickname of Dead man walking; the State of Virginia, after a weary struggle, condemn him, September 14th 2000, through lethal injection.
