Career
1960s
He attended Sir George Monoux Grammar School, Walthamstow and City of London College. His first job was at Nathaniel Berry’s piano and music shop Walthamstow. His first group, playing drums, was a trio completed by Peter and Paul Freshney called Spectre (from James Bond) playing local theatres on the Granada circuit. Spectre recorded two albums for Barclay Records of France, produced by then session drummer . When the trio broke up Dave continued as a jobbing drummer playing pubs and clubs with various musicians and combos in the East End of London. This lead to a lifelong friendship with key-board player Roger Laverne (sadly no longer with us) of The Tornados fame (Telstar) Another of Dave’s early groups were The Stalkers featuring the then unknown but later to become a rock giant, super guitarist Mick Box of .
Dave did two seasons as a Pontin’s Bluecoat and played on Cunard cruising ships. Also he toured US bases in Germany and Spain with a Leicester band, The Clansmen. This was followed by summer and hotel winter seasons with the Bob Fitzpatrick Band and a contract at the Rheingold Club, Oxford Street, and the Latin Quarter in Soho.
1970s
In 1972 Dave moved to Hull where he formed the trio Granny’s Rocking Chair playing pubs, clubs, hotels and holiday sites across the north of England. As well as band work, Dave played many solo gigs on guitar under the name of Dave Mc Carron.
1980s
Dave formed Writers Reign Ltd with fellow musician Stephen Burnby and they wrote and recorded the orchestral suite about the Humber Bridge. Being a keen Hull FC supporter Dave, along with guest musicians recorded "Old Faithful", the club’s theme song, and "Come on you Hull", which still get played at Hull FC’s home matches at the KC Stadium in Hull. To date it has had about 45,000 hits on YouTube
1990s
Dave worked as a solo guitar/vocal act, children’s entertainer and quiz master. His act included comic and risqué songs (for the adults!) and he recorded a cassette tape of them titled ‘Old King Cole’. He also appeared on several TV shows as an extra and won the Weakest Link and Countdown. As a complete change of direction he trained and qualified as a clinical hypnotherapist and ran a successful practice for several years.
2000s
Well established now and working regularly six nights a week it came as a shock to be diagnosed with prostate cancer. Fortunately it was caught and treated early and Dave made a complete recovery. Throughout this period Dave never stopped ‘quizzing’ and performing the odd gig.:
Now
After initially meeting J Bailey in 2002 David later took part in a surveillance experiment in 2013, where he developed a frienship with the interviewer J Bailey. Another change of persona and re-branded as Diesel Dave, he recorded I’m not a pleasant Trucker and The Fall out Shelter Song with Ian J Cole for Sinner Music of Pocklington. Dave renewed his friendship with Mick Box who has been a constant source of friendship and inspiration.
