The application is widely used by staff including clinicians in the British National Health Service to report clinical incidents. Staff are trained in using Datix as part of an NHS trust’s mandatory and statutory training. The system can even be used by paramedics, and if necessary entries can be made by telephone. The system can be used to manage incident reporting, complaints, claims, requests for information, safety alerts and risk.
Serco Health implemented Datix web-based incident and risk management software at various healthcare organisations and seven prisons throughout the UK.
East London NHS Foundation Trust introduced changes to its Datix system for incident reporting in 2014 to make it more useful. It now gives feedback to the original reporter about actions taken to address their concerns, and there are dashboards in Datix to allow services to view trends in incidents over time, and integrate incident data with other quality data, which staff can access from any computer.
Data from the system can form the basis of academic research into patient safety issues.
