  • Beijing loyalists launched a TIRADE against veteran democrat lawmaker Martin Lee Chu-ming yesterday, calling him a "running dog" and a "traitor" for urging the United States and other countries to use next year's Beijing Olympics to force China to improve its human-rights record.2

  • Hong Kong and Macau have agreed to negotiate with the mainland government on combining into one the current separate visas for mainland tourists visiting the two cities.3

  • A 70-year-old man and two women who disappeared after their vessel sank are feared dead as a two-day air-and-sea rescue operation near Cheung Chau came up empty.4

  • Chief Executive Donald Tsang said that democracy, if taken to the extreme, could spark scenes reminiscent of the disastrous decade-long purge of capitalist influence, which tore the country apart. Hong Kong's leader has been forced to make an unprecedented apology after warning that democracy could lead to the chaos of the Cultural Revolution, in which millions of Chinese were persecuted. Tsang is currently spearheading the process of introducing universal suffrage into the former British colony.5
