Coryn/Nyroc
Coryn is a Barn Owl from the Guardians of Ga'hoole series.
Born the son of Kludd and Nyra, Coryn was originally named Nyroc because of his birth at the time of the eclipse. Growing up, Nyroc was raised to be the perfect leader of the Pure Ones. His only friend was a Sooty Owl named Dustytuft, whom Nyroc called Phillip when they were alone. Nyroc was an impressive owl: an astounding flyer, an excellent hunter, and a devout believer in the lies his mother told him of his father's death and of his uncle, Soren.
Nyroc first began to question the Pure Ones' ways when he witnessed the burning of his father's bones. In the flames, Nyroc saw the legendary Ember of Hoole, and this was noticed by Gwyndor, the smith who had started the fire. Seeking to disillusion Nyroc and spare him a life of evil, Gwyndor took him aside and made another fire, in which Nyroc saw the foul history of his family. As Gwyndor had predicted, Nyroc had fire sight, the mystic ability to see images in flames.
Seeking to know the truth, Nyroc fled the Pure Ones with Phillip. Along the way, Nyroc learned from his friend about standards, and the truth of the Guardians of Ga'Hoole and his uncle. Sadly, their freedom did not last, for Nyra caught up with her son and Phillip was killed. Denouncing his mother and his name, he drifted from kingdom to kingdom. Sadly, this left him an outcast, and due to a scar inflicted by his mother across his face he was mistaken for Nyra by many, including a family of Burrowing Owls.
After some time of this, Nyroc met the scroom of Strix Struma, who told him to go to Beyond the Beyond. Along the way, Nyroc met the eagles Zan and Streak and the owl Mist. Learning how to read and write from them, he changed his name to Coryn, reversing the letters of Nyroc, and creating a name rather like that of his uncle. Continuing along, he met again with the family of Burrowing Owls. Recovering an egg stolen from them by Pure Ones, Coryn befriended them, and the newborn was named Little Coryn.
As he traveled, he accumulated a small knowledge of the Legends of Ga'Hoole. Unfortunately, this knowledge gave him unsound IDeaS, and he believed himself a successor to Grank, the first collier, who had also had fire sight. Reaching Beyond the Beyond, his reputation grew as he befriended the dire wolves of that land. Upon reaching the Sacred Volcanos where the Ember of Hoole lay buried, he met Otulissa, an owl from the Great Tree, and reunited with Gwyndor. Later, Coryn returned to Ga'Hoole and met his uncle, Soren. When there he made a great speech at his arrival which was: "Where there are legends there can be hope. Where there are legends, there can be dreams of knightly owls, from a kingdom called Ga'Hoole, who will rise each night into the blackness and perform noble deeds.Owls who speak no words but true ones owls whose only purpose is to right all wrongs,to make strong the weak, mend the broken, vanquish the proud, and make powerless those who abuse the frail. With hearts sublime, they take flight." Afterwards, a great ryb of Ga'Hoole died, Ezylyrb, he instructed the two owls to study the secret legends of Ga'Hoole, in which Coryn learned about The Ancient king, Hoole and Nacht'magen. In The Golden Tree, Coryn went traveling with the Band in search of answers to quell his fears about being a hagsfiend. While he was gone, the Ember of Hoole, which he retrieved in Beyond the Beyond, began to have an odd and influential effect on the Guardians. When Coryn returned, he ended it by hiding the Ember of Hoole with Bubo's coals in the forge at the Great Tree.
