Copper aspartate
Copper aspartate, often referred to as copper L-aspartate, is a dietary supplement taken to increase dietary intake of copper. It is made from the reaction between cupric carbonate and aspartic acid (from chemical synthesis) and is a manufactured product used as a 'non-food' supplement
Chemical Properties
Copper aspartate is a bluish-green crystalline powder, slightly soluble in water showing a loss on drying of not more than 6 % (at 250°C) (Technical dossier, 2005m).
Bioavailability of Copper Aspartate
No specific bioavailability studies were made available on this salt. It was thus considered that since copper aspartate is freely soluble in water or in diluted hydrochloric acid solutions, it will dissociate to its corresponding ions in the gastrointestinal tract. It can thus be anticipated that this compound will have similar bioavailability to other soluble sources of the salts in the diet.
Hazards
Copper aspartate is slightly hazardous in case of eye contact (irritant). In case of contact, immediately flush eyes with plenty of water for at least 15 minutes and get medical attention if irritation occurs.
